Every year I pick who is going to win, who should win, and the dark horse. With the various types of films that are nominated, it makes it fun to research my picks. This year, the common theme seems to be sadness. Each movie brings you on an emotional roller coaster. With that said, movies are art, and way to express oneself with the viewer’s perspective, and to experience in a personal point of view.
Here are my picks for this year’s Oscars:
Who will Win: La La Land
Who Should Win: La La Land
Dark Horse: Moonlight
There is no surprise that when a movie about Hollywood is the favorite to win Best Film. In fact, it is almost guaranteed win. The ode to the classic films makes it inevitable for any other movie to beat out La La Land. However, if any movie can knock off La La Land, Moonlight is the only film with a chance.
Who will Win: Damien Chazelle – La La Land
Who Should Win: Damien Chazelle – La La Land
Dark Horse: Barry Jenkins - Moonlight
Damien Chazelle did a rich and unique film that made it easy to choose him for the favorite. Chazelle directs a great artistic films filled with symbolisms to express the modern day storytelling/musical performance. However Barry Jenkins who directed Moonlight does give La La Land a run for its money.
Who will Win: Emma Stone – La La Land
Who Should Win: Emma Stone - La La Land
Dark Horse: Natalie Portman - Jackie
Emma Stone with the directing of Damien Chazelle made this movie pop. This is the best performance in her career. She is stunning and illustrates such a transfiguration of her character, that she should be the sure win. Natalie Portman as Jackie is the Dark Horse and her portraying Jackie Kennedy is the best enactment of our former First Lady ever done.
Who will Win: Casey Affleck – Manchester by the Sea
Who Should Win: Denzel Washington - Fences
Dark Horse: Ryan Gosling – La La Land
It is going to be close between Casey Affleck and Denzel Washington. I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes either way. I do believe that Denzel’s performance edges out Casey Affleck’s performance…however we are splitting hairs. However Ryan Gosling character was the rock in La La Land, he could bring the upset for the win.
Best Supporting Actress
Who will Win: Viola Davis - Fences
Who Should Win: Viola Davis - Fences
Dark Horse: Michelle Williams – Manchester by the Sea
Viola Davis performs the most iconic performances in film this year in Fences. Her acting performance in Fences is my lock for the Oscar win. It is so good, that even though there is other great talent nominated, I cannot see anyone winning this award but Viola.
Best Supporting Actor
Who will Win: Mahershala Ali - Moonlight
Who Should Win: Jeff Bridges – Hell or High Water
Dark Horse: Dev Patel - Lion
Though I feel that Viola Davis is a sure win, supporting actor is going to be close call. I do think Mahershala Ali in Moonlight is going to take home Oscar however I do think Jeff Bridges in Hell or High Water should take it. Bridges was brilliant and was one of his best performances as an actor. Regardless, I expect that Mahershala Ali will win, he definitely deserves it for his brilliant performance.
Best Original Screenplay
Who will Win: Manchester by the Sea
Who Should Win: Manchester by the Sea
Dark Horse: La La Land
Manchester by the Sea is my favorite for original screenplay. It will be a close win against the movie La La Land with the mass momentum the movie has with the voters. Yet Manchester by the Sea’s screenplay is very well done. It is my vote.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Who will Win: Moonlight
Who Should Win: Moonlight
Dark Horse: Lion
Out of all the categories, I feel like it is the toughest category to pick the winner. We have Moonlight, that is brilliant which spans over 3 decades of an incredible journey to the film Hidden Figures, a biopic picture that is true inspiration of the forgotten ladies who lead the US in the space race. We have the screenplay of Lion, a movie of a man finding home again to the film Arrival, a unique movie of us trying to communicate with Extra Terrestrials. Don’t forget about the brilliantly written Fences. Moonlight should pull it off, but it will be a tossup between the votes spreading thin between these picks so anyone can pull it off.
Best Animated Film
Who will Win: Zootopia
Who Should Win: Kubo and the Two Strings
Dark Horse: Kubo and the Two Strings
This category usually belongs to Disney…especially now they own Pixar. I expect Zootopia to take this win. If I could vote, I would have picked Kubo and the Two Strings. It is such a masterful film, and will become iconic as time goes on. I hope Kubo wins, but I doubt it with the powerhouse behind for Zootopia. I do like Zootopia but it would be second on my list. However, sometimes what I may choose isn’t what the masses pick.
