Disney has been taking classic animated films and converting them into modern classic tales….Disney style. The recent films that have been done are films like Alice and Wonderland and Cinderella which have been huge successes in the film industry. When Warner brothers tried taking on Peter Pan’s story with called Pan, it flopped miserably. Does Disney just have the magice touch?
Disney is now taking on the live version of the Jungle Book. Jon Favreau who directed the first Iron Man that burst the Marvel franchise wide open, takes on a story about an orphan boy that is found in the jungle by a Black Panther named Bagheera. The wolf pack took Mowgli in as one of there own. The day a tiger named Shere Khan came to Peace Rock, which is place were animals take a truce not to harm each other while Peace Rock is visible by not being underwater, Shere Khan declared that he wanted Mowgli and prefers his dead in fear of him growing up to become a man. Mowgli understands the threat to his family and friends. He decides to leave with Bagheera to go to the man village. With all different obstacles to get to the man village, and the question is what is home to Mowgli, the jungle if full of suprises.
I was so happy to see that they stayed close to the storyline of the original animated film. The only drawback is that the viewer can start comparing the animated version to the current version. However, Favreau pulls off a great decpiction. A movie that has a great script, but if it isn’t executed right, it can fail…and vice versa. Favreau’s depiction had casted the perfect Mowgli. Then he had such great cast of voice characters that only enhanced the film. He had supporting actors like Sir Ben Kingsley as Bagherra, Idris Elba as Shere Khan, Bill Murray as Baloo, Scarlett Johansson as Kaa, and the legend Christopher Walken as King Louie.
If I can recommend one change would be to change Baloo from being a lazy bear and make him more care free bear. Because this is a darker version, Baloo would have been the one character who could have lighten the movie a bit more.
I would recommend seeing the Jungle Book. Disney has done it again. They do have the formula to make an instant classic again. I don’t think it is dark enough for kids to stay away. It only compeletes the film more than the origional. It is for the family, and the storyline was more complete than the original. Go see it!
