How Pixar Almost Deleted Toy Story 2 or: Always Have a Backup
By: Brad Hodson

A story is coming across the wire today, a generally age-old tale, but never from such a well-known player. The shocking headline is how Pixar almost deleted Toy Story 2 in its entirety a little before release. The culprit, say Oren Jacob and Galyn Susman, was a tiny 3-character command (RM*) which begins a systematic wipe of everything on the drives Pixar was using to store the movie files. Now this normally wouldn't be a problem, since Pixar kept a backup of their files. However, they quickly discovered that, for some unknown reason, their backups had been offline for at least a month.
This, dear readers, is the reason why every digital project, whether it be a comic, short film, indie feature, or your next epic song, should be saved in 3 places. That's three, tres places. One original and two secure backups can and will save you in the point of no return, when those special erase strokes are typed so nonchalantly.
We here at CrankLeft have completed our first short film, Marooned (yet to have it's public unveil), and have followed this method of 1 original and 2 backup areas throughout the entire production. Even now, we haven't put all our rendered and raw eggs in one digital basket that can be easily squashed by temperature, gravity, tornadoes, floods, alien invasions, machine insurrection, or heaven forbid 3 foul keyboard strokes.
This video is both entertaining and educational so head on over and check it out. Some of the videos have already been taken offline, but at least you can still see it here.
